Free public lecture and "Skills for Healing" cancer seminar coming to Sydney

The Cape Breton Cancer Centre and the Healing and Cancer Foundation will be co-hosting two events this month.

On Friday, Oct. 19, a free public lecture, “How Understanding Your Brain Can Empower Your Life on the Cancer Journey”, takes place from 7 to 9 p.m. The lecture draws on recent brain science which shows that our brains continue to change throughout our lifetime. Presenter Dr. Rob Rutledge will teach the essential healing skills in a lively and interactive fashion and will provide a practical and integrated approach to a cancer diagnosis. The lecture is open to everyone and is for all types of cancer.

On Saturday, Oct. 20, the “Skills for Healing” cancer seminar takes place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. It includes topics like ways to get the best care from the medical system, healthy lifestyle habits and the science of the mind-body connection. Attendees learn healing skills like mindfulness-based stress reduction, meditation, reframing difficult thoughts and simple visualizations. An essential component of the seminar is allowing people to share and reflect on their experience in a safe and supportive environment. The seminar is open to anyone who has been touched by cancer.

Both events will be held at the Salvation Army Citadel, 55 Inglis Street in Sydney.

Dr. Rob Rutledge is a radiation oncologist in Halifax specializing in breast, prostate and pediatric cancers. He is also an associate professor in the Faculty of Medicine at Dalhousie University. In 1999, Dr. Rutledge co-created the “Skills for Healing” cancer weekend retreats. These weekend support groups teach a powerful and integrated approach to the cancer diagnosis and ways to heal in mind, body and spirit. To date, 1,900 people have attended more than 50 retreats in over 25 cities across Canada and abroad.

Both the public lecture and the seminar are free. For more information or to register for the seminar, please call 902-567-8556.
