Renovations, installation of new equipment underway at Glace Bay Hospital's diagnostic imaging department

As part of renovations underway in the x-ray department at Glace Bay Hospital, Dennis Howley, foreman with Joneljim Construction, reviews drawings to ensure everything is ready for the construction of walls and window frames for the department’s diagnostic imaging control room.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

GLACE BAY, N.S. – Renovations are underway in the diagnostic imaging (X-ray) department at Glace Bay Hospital to allow for the installation of new equipment.

Work began in mid-November with the removal of two aging analogue X-ray units that are 14 and 26 years old, respectively, and need to be replaced.

Renovation work is ongoing and on schedule. Once the renovations are completed, the new equipment will be installed and tested, and diagnostic imaging staff will be trained. Barring any unexpected delays, the project should be completed in March. The estimated cost of the project is about $970,000. Funding has been provided for this project from the Department of Health and Wellness.

There is no impact to patients during this project. Service is being provided with a digital portable X-ray machine and the remaining X-ray equipment located in the department. Because the work is being done inside the department, there should be no impact on patients in nearby services, such as lab and ultrasound, or on people in the waiting area outside the department.

Patients going to the hospital for X-rays are able to access services but should use caution while they are inside the diagnostic imaging department.

The diagnostic imaging department at Glace Bay Hospital performs about 13,985 X-ray exams per year.

The digital X-ray machine will help reduce radiation exposure and improve efficiency, as procedures can be performed in a shorter amount of time. It will also improve operations and ergonomics for the department’s staff.

Nova Scotia Health Authority appreciates the public’s patience and cooperation while this work is underway.
