Nova Scotians in need of tissue transplants now have much quicker access to care, thanks to a unique collaboration between Nova Scotia Health Authority’s (NSHA) Regional Tissue Bank (RTB) and the Nova Scotia Medical Examiner Service (NSMES). That’s because a dedicated tissue recovery suite is located inside the medical examiner’s office – the first partnership of its kind in Canada.
The Cape Breton Cancer Centre and the Healing and Cancer Foundation will be co-hosting two events this month: a free public lecture, “How Understanding Your Brain Can Empower Your Life on the Cancer Journey” and the “Skills for Healing” cancer seminar.
NSHA’s Wellness Funds allow community health boards to fund and partner with local non-profit community groups, to improve and promote health by addressing income, education, social supports, early childhood development and other determinants of health.
Wellness Funds are for non-profit groups working to improve health in their communities and must address the health priorities identified by the Community Health Boards (CHBs) in their current community health plan. Over the past decade, the delivery of health services in this province has been shifting from a primarily hospital-based model of care to a health promotion, or population health based approach. This model of care seeks to maintain and improve the health of people and the communities in which they live through partnerships, and by addressing those aspects of a person’s life that determine their health.

The site will support efforts to recruit family doctors and specialists by making it easier for physicians and specialists to see available opportunities or express interest in future opportunities. The site also provides an enhanced visual sales pitch about what makes Nova Scotia a great place to practice medicine and a great place to live.
