Yarmouth Regional Hospital Volunteers Recognized by Entire Community
From April 15-21, NSHA is honouring National Volunteer Week. This week we’re celebrating the amazing contribution of the 7,000 dedicated members of our community who make a difference, big and small to the well-being of patients, families, clients and residents. Thank you.
When she got the call telling her she has been recognized as the Volunteer of the Year for the Town of Yarmouth, Annette Surette thought it must be a joke. Although she has volunteered nearly 6,000 hours at Yarmouth Regional Hospital, Annette certainly doesn’t do it for the recognition.
“I get just as much from doing this as any help I give others,” said Annette. And she does give plenty of help to others. She provides directions and assistance to patients, visitors and staff at the information desk, the gift shop and most often at the Cancer Centre. As a cancer survivor herself, she appreciates the friendships and the conversations she has with people who are going through very tough moments in their lives.
“It keeps me busy and keeps me young,” said Annette, but then she adds quietly with her usual smile, “And it gives me a purpose. Along with my family.”
Tanya Maillet, volunteer resources consultant, with Nova Scotia Health Authority, said Annette is a key volunteer who often goes above and beyond for others. “She helps with training new volunteers to their role as well. She also is very flexible with her volunteer time and often changes her schedule to make sure all shifts in the cancer centre are covered. We are very lucky to have her and proud she is receiving this special recognition.”
While Annette is being recognized by Yarmouth Town, the volunteer of the year for the Municipality of Yarmouth, Tony Dorrian, is also associated with Nova Scotia Health Authority. Among his many volunteer activities, Tony serves as co-chair of the Yarmouth County Community Health Board. Each Christmas, Tony also sings with the Strolling Carolers, which performs for patients and residents of Yarmouth Regional Hospital and Veteran’s Place.
Annette and Tony were both recognized at the Provincial Volunteer Awards Day on Monday, April 9, in Halifax. A reception in their local community will be held at Yarmouth Town Hall, April 17.
