The mentally ill offender unit provides psychiatric assessments to individuals remanded by the courts of the Nova Scotia justice system to determine if an individual is not criminally responsible and/or unfit to stand trial related to criminal charges they are facing. Depending on the outcome of the court proceedings, individuals can be found Not Criminally Responsible (NCR) or unfit to stand trial and may begin the process of rehabilitation in one of the hospital's other programs.
The unit also provides inpatient psychiatric care to individuals from the Nova Scotia correctional system.
